ULTRA LOW FRICTION FILMS FOR WEAR REDUCTION

Characteristics of Diamond-Like Films Produced by Ion Beam Technique

  • Extremely Low Coefficient of Friction : < 0.1 in Dry Nitrogen, Humid Air, Water and Ultra High Vacuum
  • Extremely Low Wear Rate : < 10-6mm3/Nm in Dry Nitrogen, Humid Air and Water
  • Low Temperature Process Coating :< 100oC
  • Optically Smooth Surface:< 2 A Ra, RMS
  • Chemically Inert: Against all Organic Solvents, Acid and Base at Ambient Temperature
  • Ultra Hard ~ 15 GPa
  • Excellent Adhesion on Various Materials: Metals, Alloys, Ceramics, Composites, Polymers and Optical Window Materials
  • Thermal Stability: -50oC to 250oC

Potential Commercial Uses

  • Self-lubricating, wear-resistant barriers for many types of moving mechanical assemblies: valves, seals, bearings, gears, disc, blades, medical implants and biodevices, jet-nozzles, guides, computer disk coating
  • Solid-film lubricant for ceramics such as SiC, Si3N4 and Al2O3
  • Cost-effective high performance coatings: composites aircraft skins, radar dome, casing skins, release agents, optical devices, fibers, mirrors, chemical Protestants, erosion/corrosion Protestants, tool inserts and antireflection coating
